About EMPI-Enabled Enterprises

Enterprise Master Person Index (EMPI) is an optional enterprise feature of HPF WebStations and Horizon Physician Portal for Horizon Patient Folder Modules. Using HL7 transactions, data from multiple Hospital Information Systems across the enterprise populates the HPF database. This enables the enterprise to link a patient's medical data across facilities.

EMPI functionality provides the following:

The EMPI feature provides system users with the ability to search using:

When the patient is found in the system, the patient's name is returned on a single row in the Search Results table, even if the patient is found in more than one Health Information System. When the patient is selected, all encounters across the enterprise for that patient are provided and all documents (both global and encounter-related) are available for viewing. (Access to records and documents is based on the usual HPF user permissions.)

Facility identification

The facility associated with the patient/encounter is identified both on the list of encounters and on the document tree in the Content panel in the viewer. Also, the EPN is displayed on the demographic information banner in the viewer.

Enabling the EMPI feature

The HPF Workstation system administrator enables the EMPI feature in HPF Workstation. The optional prefix your enterprise uses for the EPN can also be configured so that the system displays it automatically on the Patient Search window. This avoids repetitious entry of this data and also enables the system to perform faster searches.

EMPI auditing and reporting

If your enterprise elects to use the EMPI, the EPN is displayed on system reports. Additionally, if you choose to track and display EPN searches in the audit trail, the system tracks search selection criteria when you access a patient's record.
